What is this test? The 17 - ALPHA OH PROGESTERONE (17 OHP) test measures the amount of 17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone, a substance made by the adrenal glands, in your blood. The body converts 17-OHP into the essential hormone cortisol, which helps manage stress, regulate blood sugar, and maintain blood pressure. This test is the primary method used to screen for, diagnose, and monitor a genetic disorder called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). In CAH, a specific enzyme deficiency prevents the conversion of 17-OHP to cortisol. This results in a buildup of 17-OHP in the blood and an overproduction of male hormones (androgens). Test instructions Alcohol: Please abstain from alcohol before the test. Medication: Inform your doctor of all medications you are currently taking, as some can affect the results. Do not stop any prescribed medication without first consulting your physician. Timing: An early morning sample collection may be required as hormone levels fluctuate. For women, your doctor may recommend testing at a specific time during your menstrual cycle. Reports Soft Copy (Portal/Email): If the sample is collected before 12 noon, the report will be delivered as per the indicated Turn Around Time (TAT). For samples collected after 12 noon, 12 hours may be added to the Report Turn Around Time. Hard Copy: Delivered at home upon request. A small convenience fee may apply. Why is it Done? The 17 - ALPHA OH PROGESTERONE (17 OHP) test is performed to: Screen newborns for classic CAH, a serious condition that requires prompt treatment. Diagnose late-onset CAH in older children and adults showing symptoms like irregular periods and excess body hair (females) or early puberty (males). Monitor CAH treatment to ensure hormone levels are being managed effectively. Investigate symptoms of hormone imbalance, such as ambiguous genitalia in infants or signs of high androgen levels in women, helping to distinguish CAH from other conditions.
