What is this test? The ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone) test measures the level of adrenocorticotropic hormone, which is made by the pituitary gland and stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Test Instructions 📝 A blood sample is drawn, usually early in the morning. Reports ACTH levels are always interpreted along with a cortisol level. - High ACTH with High Cortisol: Suggests Cushing's disease. - High ACTH with Low Cortisol: Suggests Addison's disease. - Low ACTH with High Cortisol: Suggests an adrenal tumor. - Low ACTH with Low Cortisol: Suggests a pituitary problem. Why is it Done? 🤔 To differentiate between different causes of excess cortisol (Cushing's) or low cortisol (adrenal insufficiency).
