What is this test? The ANA (Anti-Nuclear Antibody) test detects the presence of autoantibodies that target the nucleus of the body's own cells. In autoimmune diseases, the immune system mistakenly produces these autoantibodies. A positive ANA test is a hallmark of systemic autoimmune disease. Test Instructions 📝 The test requires a blood sample drawn from a vein. No special preparation is needed. Reports A "positive" ANA result means autoantibodies were detected. This result is usually followed by: - Titer: Indicates the concentration of the antibodies (e.g., 1:40, 1:80, 1:160). Higher titers are more significant. - Pattern: Describes the pattern of fluorescence seen under the microscope (e.g., homogeneous, speckled), which can be associated with different autoimmune disorders. A positive ANA test does not confirm a diagnosis on its own.
