What is this test? The ASMA (Anti-Smooth Muscle Antibody) test detects autoantibodies that target the body's own smooth muscle cells. Their presence is a key indicator of autoimmune hepatitis, where the body's immune system attacks liver cells. Test Instructions 📝 A simple blood draw from a vein in the arm is required. No special preparation is necessary. Reports The result is typically reported as a titer. Titers of 1:40 or higher are considered positive. Higher titers (>1:80) are more specific for autoimmune hepatitis Type 1. Why is it Done? 🤔 The ASMA test is primarily done to: - Help diagnose autoimmune hepatitis. - Distinguish autoimmune hepatitis from other causes of liver disease. - It is often ordered with an ANA test for patients with symptoms of liver damage.
