What is this test? A Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) - Serum test measures the amount of nitrogen in your blood that comes from the waste product urea. Urea is made when protein is broken down in your body. Urea is made in the liver and passed out of your body in the urine. A BUN test is done to see how well your kidneys are working. Test instructions Alcohol: Please abstain from alcohol before the test. Medication: Any pre-existing medication should only be stopped after consultation with the referring Physician. Reports Soft Copy (Portal/Email) : If the sample is collected before 12 noon then the report will get delivered as per Reporting Time / Maximum TAT (Turn Around Time) indicated with the test. For samples collected after 12 Noon, 12 hours may be added to the Report Turn Around Time Hard Copy : Delivered at home upon request. A small convenience fee may apply. Why is it Done? A Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test is done to see how well your kidneys are functioning. BUN test is usually done in People with any of the following symptoms • Swelling or puffiness, particularly around the eyes or in the face and legs • Decreased urine output • Back pain • Foamy and/or dark coloured urine • Problems during urination, such as a burning , increased frequency, increased urge to pass urine People already suffering with diseases like Diabetes, Hypertension and kidney diseases • To monitor kidney functioning • To understand the severity of disease and delay or prevent complications such as kidney failure, heart diseases, bone diseases, severe infections and multi organ failure.
