What is this test? The CRP (C-Reactive Protein) test measures the level of CRP, a protein produced by the liver, in your blood. The liver releases CRP into the bloodstream in response to inflammation. The level of CRP can be a general marker for infection and inflammatory conditions throughout the body. Test Instructions 📝 A blood sample is required for this test. A healthcare professional will draw blood from a vein in your arm. No special preparation, such as fasting, is typically required for a standard CRP test. However, it is always best to follow any specific instructions provided by your doctor. Reports The results are usually reported in milligrams per liter (mg/L). Normal: Less than 10 mg/L. A low level of CRP is considered normal. Elevated: A level above 10 mg/L is a sign of significant inflammation or infection. The cause could be a serious bacterial infection, a fungal infection, an autoimmune flare-up, or other inflammatory conditions. The CRP level can rise and fall quickly, so the test may be repeated to monitor the effectiveness of treatment. Why is it Done? 🤔 The CRP test is done to: - Check for or monitor inflammation in acute or chronic conditions. - Help diagnose infections, particularly after surgery. - Evaluate conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
