What is this test? The Erythropoietin (EPO) test measures the level of the hormone EPO, which is produced by the kidneys and stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. Test Instructions 📝 A blood sample is drawn from a vein. No special preparation is usually required. Reports EPO levels are interpreted along with a CBC. - Low EPO with Anemia: Suggests kidney disease is the cause of the anemia. - High EPO with Anemia: Suggests the kidneys are responding, but the bone marrow is not. - High EPO with Polycythemia: Suggests a tumor is producing excess EPO. Why is it Done? 🤔 To investigate the cause of anemia or an abnormally high red blood cell count (polycythemia).
