What is this test? Fasting Blood Glucose (FBS) is a blood test that helps to measure levels of fasting glucose (sugar) in blood. Blood sample is drawn from the vein in the arm. Test instructions Fasting- 8-12 hours fasting is recommended. Fluids Allowed- Water only. Alcohol- Please abstain from alcohol before the test. Medication- Any pre-existing medication should only be stopped after consultation with the referring Physician. Reports Soft Copy (Portal/Email): If the sample is collected before 12 noon then the report will get delivered as per Reporting Time / Maximum TAT (Turn Around Time) indicated with the test. For samples collected after 12 Noon, 12 hours may be added to the Report Turn Around Time. Hard Copy: Delivered at home upon request. A small convenience fee may apply. Why is it Done? As a part of routine health test. To screen and diagnose pre-diabetes and diabetes. It is highly recommended for people who have strong risk factors for developing diabetes like family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol levels, women with Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), Physical inactivity. FBS test not only helps to monitor glucose levels but also to understand the severity of diabetes and delay or prevent diabetes complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and blindness. Check the effectiveness of treatment (medication, diet and lifestyle changes) and helps the doctor to change the treatment plan accordingly
