What is this test? Myoglobin is a protein that's typically found in heart and skeletal muscle tissues. The only time that myoglobin is found in the urine is when an injury to a muscle has occurred. In particular, injury to the skeletal muscle results in the release of myoglobin. When detected through a blood test, the presence of myoglobin is clinically significant. Test instructions Alcohol: Please abstain from alcohol before the test. Medication: Any pre-existing medication should only be stopped after consultation with the referring Physician. Fluids Allowed: Water only. Reports Soft Copy (Portal/Email): If the sample is collected before 12 noon, then the report will get delivered as per Reporting Time / Maximum TAT (Turn Around Time) indicated with the test. For samples collected after 12 Noon, 12 hours may be added to the Report Turn Around Time Hard Copy: Delivered at home upon request. A small convenience fee may apply. Why is it Done? To determine whether muscle has been injured; to help diagnose conditions associated with muscle damage; to detect high levels in the urine that can cause kidney damage after extensive muscle damage; sometimes to help determine if you have had a heart attack, although for heart attack detection, this test has been largely replaced by troponin.
