What is this test? Serum Protein Electrophoresis (SPEP) separates blood proteins into five major groups: albumin and alpha-1, alpha-2, beta, and gamma globulins. The pattern can provide clues about various diseases. Test Instructions 📝 A blood sample is drawn from a vein. Fasting for about 8 hours may be required. Reports The report shows a graph with five peaks. A sharp spike in the gamma region (M-spike) is a key finding for multiple myeloma. Abnormalities in other proteins can suggest liver disease, kidney disease, or inflammation. Why is it Done? 🤔 This test is done to: - Help diagnose and monitor multiple myeloma. - Investigate symptoms of a plasma cell disorder. - Evaluate conditions with abnormal protein production or loss.
