What is this test? The Ra Factor (Rheumatoid Factor) test measures the amount of rheumatoid factor in your blood. Rheumatoid factors are proteins (autoantibodies) produced by the immune system that can attack healthy tissues in the body. High levels of RF are most commonly associated with autoimmune diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis. Test Instructions 📝 This test requires a blood sample taken from a vein in the arm. There are no special preparations needed, such as fasting. Reports The results can be reported in two ways: - Titer: A result like ""less than 1:80"" is often considered normal. A higher ratio (e.g., 1:160) indicates a higher concentration of RF. - Units: A value, typically in international units per milliliter (IU/mL). A result less than 15 IU/mL is generally considered normal, though this can vary by lab. A "positive" result means RF was found in your blood. However, a positive RF test does not on its own diagnose rheumatoid arthritis. A "negative" result means little to no RF was found. Why is it Done? 🤔 The Ra Factor test is primarily ordered to: - Help diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA) when a patient presents with symptoms like joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. - Help diagnose Sjögren's syndrome, another autoimmune disease. - Distinguish between different types of arthritis.
