What is this test? Thyroxine - Free (FT4) is used to help evaluate thyroid function and diagnose thyroid diseases, including hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Test instructions Alcohol: Please abstain from alcohol before the test. Medication: Any pre-existing medication should only be stopped after consultation with the referring Physician. Reports Soft Copy (Portal/Email): If the sample is collected before 12 noon, then the report will get delivered as per Reporting Time / Maximum TAT (Turn Around Time) indicated with the test. For samples collected after 12 Noon, 12 hours may be added to the Report Turn Around Time Hard Copy: Delivered at home upon request. A small convenience fee may apply. Why is it Done? This test is done for Screening: It is highly recommended for people over the age of 60 and pregnant women to help in early detection and treatment of thyroid disorders. It is useful to screen when you experience any of the following symptoms: Weight gain/weight loss Cold/heat intolerance Menstrual irregularity in women Anxiety Puffiness around the eyes Tremors in the hands Hair loss Monitoring: This test not only helps to monitor thyroid hormone levels but also to understand the severity of disease and delay or prevent complications such as heart problems, mental illness, metabolic disorders, infertility and birth defects in new-borns. Management: Doing this test regularly helps to check the effectiveness of treatment and helps the doctor to change the treatment plan accordingly.
