About

What is this test? TSH Receptor Antibody (TRAb) is an autoantibody that targets the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor on the surface of thyroid cells. The presence of these antibodies is a hallmark of Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition that is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid). These antibodies can mimic the action of TSH, leading to the uncontrolled production and release of thyroid hormones. Test Instructions Alcohol: No special restrictions on alcohol are required before the test. Medication: It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, particularly any biotin (Vitamin B7) supplements, as they can interfere with the test results. Do not stop any prescribed medication without consulting your referring physician. Fluids Allowed: You may drink water and other fluids as usual; no fasting is required. Reports Soft Copy (Portal/Email): If the sample is collected before 12 noon, then the report will get delivered as per Reporting Time / Maximum TAT (Turn Around Time) indicated with the test. For samples collected after 12 Noon, 12 hours may be added to the Report Turn Around Time Hard Copy: Delivered at home upon request. A small convenience fee may apply. Why is it Done? To diagnose Graves' disease: The presence of TSH Receptor Antibodies is a primary indicator of Graves' disease and helps differentiate it from other causes of hyperthyroidism. To assess the risk of relapse: In patients undergoing treatment for Graves' disease, monitoring the levels of these antibodies can help predict the likelihood of the condition recurring after treatment is stopped. To evaluate the risk to a newborn: For pregnant women with a history of Graves' disease, this test is crucial to assess the risk of the antibodies crossing the placenta and causing a temporary thyroid disorder (neonatal thyrotoxicosis) in the baby. To aid in the diagnosis of certain types of hypothyroidism: In some cases, a different type of TSH receptor antibody that blocks the receptor can be a cause of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid).
